On Tuesday, the Bobcats traveled an hour north of DC and visited Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We watched a video about the influential battle of the Civil War, saw a massive 360 degree painting of Pickett's Charge, and had a guided bus tour of the battlefield. We saw buildings with remnants of cannon balls, places President Lincoln visited while there, and learned how the battle played out over three days in July 1863. Without this victory, the Union could have lost the Civil War. After returning to DC, we visited the MLK and FDR memorials. The plan was to also visit the Jefferson Memorial, but we didn't have time. The evening was spent in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, the oldest colonial community. We enjoyed time shopping, eating, and hanging out along the Potomac River.

Our final day in DC involved a lot of walking! We totaled about 15,000-16,000 steps on this day alone! Our day started at Arlington National Cemetery. We learned there are over 400,000 graves and funerals are held there almost daily. We visited JFK's tomb and his eternal flame and the Arlington House, which is where Confederate General Lee lived during the Civil War. We ended our time there by seeing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Changing of the Guard. Several of the adults there were wiping away tears when that was done. To end the trip, we visited the Smithsonian American History Museum and Ford's Theater. We learned about the night President Lincoln was shot and saw the theater box he was sitting in when John Wilkes Booth assassinated him. Our 9:40pm flight was delayed until 1:00am and we didn't get back to Breese until 3:30am, but these Bobcats had the trip of a lifetime! If your child is going into 6th or 7th grade, be on the lookout in the fall for information about a Summer 2027 trip.

Lunch was a picnic at the Iwo Jima memorial
Top hat won’t by Lincoln when he was assassinated.
Yesterday in DC was a blast of all of us and full of emotion! We started the day with a tour of the US Capitol and stood inside the rotunda. After that, we went to the White House and some our Bobcats did the Cupid Shuffle on Pennsylvania Avenue. We walked across the street to the Library of Congress and then the Supreme Court. The afternoon was the Holocaust Museum. The history and the artifacts there were so moving and emotional for all of us. The evening was the Vietnam and Korean Wall Memorials and the Lincoln Monument.

Early (like really early) Sunday morning, a group of Bobcats left Breese for Washington, DC. Once we arrived, we went to the Washington Monument, World War 2 Memorial, two Smithsonian museums, the National Archives, and the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. Lots of tired Bobcats, but we are having the time of our lives! #BobcatsInDC
